HVAC SIZING / TECHNICAL GUIDE

A clear first pass at HVAC sizing.

See the calculator’s supported inputs, how it breaks down power, and what its preliminary sensible-capacity result can—and cannot—tell you.

01 / UNIT SYSTEMS

Start with the duty you need to size

The calculator handles three separate checks. Each one has its own inputs and a result breakdown for an early estimate.

01 / PUMP

Pump power

Estimate power at a requested steady-state flow and total dynamic head.

Inputs

  • Volumetric flow and total dynamic head
  • Fluid density
  • Pump efficiency and motor efficiency

Power breakdown

  • Hydraulic power
  • Shaft power after pump efficiency
  • Motor input power and horsepower equivalent
02 / FAN

Fan power

Estimate power for a single preliminary airflow and static-pressure duty point.

Inputs

  • Airflow and static pressure
  • Air density
  • Fan efficiency and motor efficiency

Power breakdown

  • Air power
  • Shaft power after fan efficiency
  • Motor input power and horsepower equivalent
03 / THERMAL LOAD

Sensible thermal load

Estimate a preliminary sensible capacity from room, envelope, ventilation, and internal-gain inputs.

Inputs

  • Room length, width, and height; indoor and outdoor design temperatures
  • Total envelope area and overall U-value
  • Air changes per hour and occupant count with sensible gain per occupant
  • Equipment gain, lighting gain, and design allowance

Result breakdown

  • Transmission and ventilation loads
  • Occupant, equipment, and lighting gains, plus sensible subtotal
  • Preliminary sensible capacity in W, kW, and BTU/h

02 / METHOD

Read the estimate in context

The tool supports both SI and US customary units. Keep each calculation in one consistent unit system, then inspect the returned breakdown, assumptions, and limitations alongside the result.

  1. 01

Choose pump power, fan power, or thermal load to match the duty point you want to check.

  2. 02

Enter the inputs for that mode and use either SI or US customary units.

  3. 03

Review the component breakdown and the assumptions and limitations shown with the result.

03 / SCOPE

Know where the estimate stops

The calculator is a screening aid for early decisions. It does not replace detailed system analysis or qualified equipment selection.

Pump and fan modes

They do not select a manufacturer or model or check equipment curves. Pump checks also omit NPSH, viscosity, controls, and the system curve. Fan checks omit sound, surge or stall, system effect, filtration, and controls.

Thermal-load mode

It estimates sensible load only. It excludes latent load, solar orientation and shading, detailed assemblies, duct losses, psychrometrics, code compliance, and Manual J or engineer sign-off.

A preliminary result

Values are early estimates, not certified equipment selection, a final design, or a cooling or heating recommendation. Fan air properties are not corrected for altitude or temperature.
